A Story of Courage
In February of 2019, Brynn was playing in a tournament with her Stingmates. Unfortunately, during one of the games, Brynn took a cleat to the top of her foot when her opponent stepped back. Normally, this wouldn’t faze her, but this injury took her out of the game, off the field, and to an orthopedic doctor.
In June of that same year, after we played the “rest to heal” game for the 3rd time in a row (she was stepped on 3 times in a row on the same foot), her coach said, “I’m not liking how long this is taking. This just doesn’t make sense to me and I know a great doctor. Can I share what’s going on with him?” At this point, we were ready for some answers and, answers we got! Brynn was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma on July 6th, 2019.
With the love and support that Sting provided, Brynn was able to remain a part of the team. Going through an aggressive chemotherapy plan and being stripped from her social life didn’t stop the #StingStrong movement. The organization kept Brynn on the roster and in their hearts throughout her year-long cancer journey. They came to the hospital to remind her she wasn’t alone; allowed her to walk on the field for the first kick in a tournament game; stood alongside her while she was being honored during the MLS Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; plugged her into invaluable resources and opportunities within the organization, affording her time to heal and grow mentally; gave her the peace of mind to know she has a soccer home and to also know, those in this Sting family are patient and eager to see her succeed, on and off the field. For an athlete, the team is everything, and she never lost this thanks to some really amazing, truly amazing people.
